VEREAD Round Table – Circle Members Sharing Experiences
July 29th, 2026 – Online via Zoom
On Monday 29 June, from 3.00 pm to 5.30 pm CET (4.00 pm–6.30 pm EAT), the concluding round-table discussion of the VEREAD project will take place – an academic and dialogue-based event that centres the voices of African women theologians to reflect on the role of women in the contemporary church in Africa.
The meeting brings together a number of academics and leading voices from the Circle of Concerned African Women Theologians, from Kenya, Uganda and Zimbabwe: Ven Canon Amb Dr Schola Wayua Kiilu (St Paul University, Nairobi); prof.ssa Mary Getui (Catholic University of Eastern Africa, Nairobi); prof.ssa Philomena Njeri Mwaura (Kenyatta University, Nairobi); dott.ssa Helen Nambalirwa Nkabala e dr.ssa Veneranda Mbabazi (Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda); Yvonne Winfildah Takawira-Matwaya (Catholic University of Zimbabwe, Harare).
The session will be moderated by Ilaria Macconi-Heckner (FSCIRE/VEREAD coordinator).
The round table aims to analyse how African women experience and contribute to the Christian faith, exploring how different cultures, communities and history shape their interpretation of the Gospel. Building on these reflections, the aim is to highlight the role of lay women in evangelisation and in the establishment of church communities, emphasising how race, gender and ecclesiastical hierarchy have historically influenced – and continue to influence today – the opportunities for women to exercise genuine spiritual leadership.
