HTLS – 2026 Annual Workshop
The 2026 annual workshop on The Historical and Theological Lexicon of the Septuagint (HTLS, Tübingen, Mohr Siebeck, 4 vols., 2020–) will take place on Tuesday, 30 June 2026, at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome (Piazza della Pilotta 35).
This collective and interdisciplinary project has for years been devoted to reconstructing the historical and linguistic meaning of the most significant terms found in the Greek Bible, through a multi-volume dictionary (directed by Eberhard Bons and Daniela Scialabba, with the coordination of Anna Mambelli).
The day's proceedings open with a reflection on the overall progress of the HTLS project and the prospects for the second volume, with particular attention to the history and criteria for the selection of the most significant Septuagint lemmas and the lexical innovations that characterise them. The sessions that follow explore a broad range of lexical, semantic, and theological themes, examining the evolution of key terms related to the emotional and cognitive sphere, perception and contemplation, the relationship between humanity and the divine, as well as the concepts of image, narration, enmity, and divine justice.
Special attention is given to the use and reception of these terms in the Greek Bible and in the New Testament, in Philonic literature, in Josephus, and in papyrological documentation as well.
