Translating the Qu'ran - Workshop internazionale di Studi Coranici

Wednesday, May 21st – from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM – and Thursday, May 22nd – from 9:00 AM to 6:30 PM – at the G. La Pira Library, the Qur’anic Studies workshop Translating the Qur’ān: Sūrat Yūsuf (Q. 12) will take place, with an introduction by dr. Francesca Badini.
The seminar, which is structured in six thematic sessions, includes presentations dedicated to the relationship between the Quranic text and biblical literature, narrative aesthetics, retoric and the exegetical history of the surah, with the interventions of Thomas Hoffmann (University of Copenhagen), Nora K. Schmid (University of Tübingen), Johanne Christiansen (University of Southern Denmark) and Walid Saleh (University of Toronto.
Legal and literary issues in Quranic narration will also be explored, along with the studies on the history of Quran translations into italian, the use of digital tools and AI in text synopses, para-textual and technical aspects in the transmission and translation of the Quran.
Joseph Lowry (University of Pennsylvania), Francesca Badini (FSCIRE), Riccardo Vigliermo (Univeristà di Modena e Reggio Emilia), Alba Fedeli (University of Hamburg) and Devin J. Stewart (Emory University) will talk about these topics.
A session will also be dedicated to methodological and experiential reflection on the translation of the sacred text (Shawkat Toorawa, Yale University; Sohaib Saeed, Ibn ‘Ashur Centre for Quranic Studies), followed by a final roundtable on the topic of the translation of Q. 12.
The workshop will end with a summary and a discussion session led by Devin J. Stewart.
