III Conference on African Academy of Religion

12th June 2026 | Online | Nairobi, Tangaza University

On Friday, 12th June 2026, the Tangaza University in Nairobi, at 8.30 am (EAT), will host the third edition of the Conference on African Academy on Religion, organized with VEREAD  and IRDIS (Institute for Interreligious Dialogue and Islamic Studies, Tangaza University), within the framework of a project co-financed by the European Union.

The theme selected fot the 2026 edition is The Ambivalence of Faith in Africa: Power, Knowledge, and Gender Dynamics.
The conference takes a multidisciplinary approach in order to analyze the ambivalent role of religion – from Christianity and Islam, to african religious traditions – as a vehicle of both emancipation and domination in african contexts, from the colonial period to the digital age.

At the center of the inquiry there will be the intersection between institutions, religious practices and structures based on race, gender, colonial violence, education and epistemic authority.

The key note speech will be delivered by Prof. Mary Getui (Catholic University of Eastern Africa).
The proceeding will also include historians, theologians, and pastoral workers who focus on Africa and the African diaspora.

It will be possibile to participate online via Zoom at the link: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/81236964675?wd=O580yRWyx0GPfbwowHibcgdS49j4f9.1
