VEREAD Workshop – Dealing with the Past

On Thursday 18 and 25 June and Monday 29 June, from 9.00 to 11.30 am CET (10.00 am –12.30 pm EAT), the virtual workshop Dealing with the Past Through Interreligious Dialogue will take place online, via Zoom.
The workshop is organized within the VEREAD project by the Institute for Interreligious Dialogue and Islamic Studies (IRDIS – Tangaza University, Nairobi) and FSCIRE, in collaboration with the University of KwaZulu-Natal, the University of Dar es Salaam, Makerere University, EIP Lab, and swisspeace.

The course offers a reflection on how societies deal with the legacy of past violence and on the role of that religious communities can play in these processes.
Through case studies and dialogue among Christian and Islamic theological perspectives as well as African philosophy, the three sessions will explore the four pillars of the Dealing with the Past doctrine: right to justice, truth, reparation, and guarantees of non-recurrence.
Contribution of interreligious dialogue, oral narratives, intergenerational exchange, and shared memory to processes of healing and reconciliation will be examined as well.
Speakers include Claudia Josi (swisspeace), Wibke Angelike (IRDIS/Tangaza University), Dr Xolani Sakuba (University of KwaZulu-Natal), Prof. Evaristi Magoti Cornelli (University of Dar es Salaam), and Dr Adan Golole (IRDIS/Tangaza University). Ilaria Macconi Heckner, coordinator of the VEREAD project, will participate for FSCIRE.
