When Worlds End (2nd Edition)
8th and 10th September 2026 | Palermo and online
On Tuesday 8th September 2026, from 3 to 6 pm, and on Thursday 10th September, from 9 am to 12 pm, the second edition of our seminar series When Worlds End. Religion and Crisis in Historical Perspective will take place at the Giorgio La Pira Library, in via degli Schioppettieri 25, Palermo.
The new series will be inaugurated by two lectures by Paul Ballanfat, Professor at Galatasaray University: Rethinking the Relations between State Power and Sufism in the Kubrawi Order after the Mongol Invasion at the Beginning of the 13th Century and The Apocalyptic of Sa'd al-din Hamûyeh (d. 650/1252-3).

The seminar series is part of our research project, Collapse, Crisis, and the (De)legitimation of Power in the History of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, which investigates moments of rupture in the history of the Abrahamic religions. The research pipeline seeks to understand how religious communities perceived, interpreted and responded to moments of crisis — from political upheavals and institutional collapse to the theological and prophetic reinterpretation of such events — highlighting strategies of adaptation and the redefinition of spiritual and social power.
The seminars will offer a long-term perspective on how historical crises have been read, narrated and reinterpreted across religious traditions, from the Scriptures to more recent narratives.
